Wikipedia

In 1950 Porsche decided to enter the 1951 Le Mans 24 Hours working with Auguste Veullet who was the French Porsche importer. Two of their unsold aluminium-bodied Gmünd coupes were set aside and underwent extensive body modifications under the guidance of Wilhelm Hild and were renamed 356 SL (Super Leicht). One of the cars was written off in pre race testing, a second was was damaged beyond repair in time for the race. So a third car was brought into service for Auguste Veuillet and Edmond Mouche, finishing 20th and first in class. For 1952 Le Mans 24 Hours, three cars were entered, two dropped out and the third driven by August Veuillet and Edmond Mouche finished eleventh and first in class.
