1971 - Daytona 24 Hours
31 January 1971 - Daytona International Speedway, USA
Pedro Rodríguez & Jackie Oliver win in a Porsche 917 K
Overall - 1st : S - 1st : GT2.5 - 1st, 2nd, 3rd The race had been a bit boring until with just a few hours left in the race, the Porsche 917 driven by Pedro Rodriguez and Jackie Oliverwhich was leading by over 200 miles began to have transmission problems. The team mechanics performed an amazingly fast rebuild of the tranmission in 92 minutes, in the process losing the lead to the NART Ferrari 512S of Tony Adamowicz and Ronnie Bucknum. Through the hard driving of Pedro they were able to catch up to and pass the ailing Ferrari for the win in what was then the closest Daytona 24 finish up to that time. The blue smoke coming from the battered and dirty 917 was from a minor oil leak but it greatly worried the Gulf mechanics. This was the second Daytona 24 win in a row for Rodriguez with both of them coming in 917 Porsches entered by J.W. Automotive.
